Hour or Two

Lay a fire using newspaper, kindling and coal in the museum's Victorian kitchen range. The museum lights a fire from October until April, as well as for special events such as 'Bake Back in Time' and for school visits and group tours.  Please note this challenge is only available to existing Visitor Experience Volunteers and Learning Volunteers. 

What's involved?

Laying a fire using newspaper, kindling and coal in the museum's Victorian kitchen range. The volunteer would need to be physically fit, for example they would need to be able to fill and lift a bucket of coal when required.  The fire needs to be lit from 9.30am on normal days and on 8am on baking days. The fire laying volunteer will join a team reposnible for laying and lighting and ideally would be able to commit to one morning a week. Fire laying takes up to 45 minutes. Full training will be given.
